My First Homeschool Meeting!

OK...well, Chris and I havent totally decided to homeschool. (I am basically waiting for his "OK!" on it). But an aquaintence I know, who I called earlier in the week and left a message for...called me back last night. She invited me to their big homeschool meeting at a large church in the next town over so I can see what it is like! Apparently they have 2 meetings a month and then one field trip a month. I think it sounds great! I can't wait to go and meet the ladies and see what I can see! It is on Monday morning. She said the nursery is filled...so i will find a babysitter for J. M will be at school and I will take X with me. He can go to the pre-K class! I am so nervous and excited!

And...since I am discussing homeschooling...I want to send a HUGE thank you out to my friend, Lea. (Most of you who comment and read here already know her as well...if not...check out her blog! It is wonderful!) She homeschools and between emails...has taught me so much and given me so much advice. I reallllly appreciate it! Thank you Lea!!!!

So anyway...I just had to share that with all of you and I will let you all know how it went when I get back on Monday. Gosh...this is so exciting!!! :o) The only thing I am afraid of is that I will totally end up wanting to do this but Chris won't want to...because he doesn't get to experience the meetings with other homeschooling mom etc and won't see how awesome it is! But...I will stay in prayer about it and leave it in God's hands where it belongs! Happy Weekend!!!

  4. you should try the spaghetti ones... they're pretty good. and i like the turkey/potatoes... and the macNcheese. i am stingy though... i try to go for the ones with the least points!! LOL! you should def get some sugar free/fat free pudding though and make yourself little dessert treats. its really nice! aaaandd... cory made us lunch today... and for 1 serving of brown rice (its good.. REALLY), 1 serving of cheese/broccoli (can get in frozen food section) and half a chicken breast (cooked with whatever seasonings you like)... its only 5 points.... and it seriously fills up your plate! it was sooo good! of course, i'm still getting used to smaller portions... so i'm still hungry - but that's when you can eat the cooked cauliflower or whatever on the side also. AND... mikes has NICE strawberries on sale for only $1.99. that's rare! 1 3/4 cups is only 1 point... get some splenda to eat on it and you'll like it... i promise!!

  5. Hi Katy. When we lived in town, I homeschooled our 3 children for 8 years. When they decided to give public school a try, they passed their placement tests and were well adjusted to "fit in" with the other kids.Homeschool gave them such a great foundation. We had such a wonderful time and I had a lot of friends who also homeschooled. We have some very special memories of that time. My prayers are with you and your family on making a decision. Blessings, Kathleen

  6. Hi Katy! :) I came here via Lea's Farmhouse Blessings blog. Lea is wonderful!!! I 'do' remember visiting your blog I think during the 5 minutes for mom Ultimate Blog Party.

I promise that I will be praying that you and your husband 'do' in fact make the decision to homeschool. Not only that you will homeschool, but that you will finish strong clear through high school! :)

My only 'unsolicited' advice that I have regarding curriculum: Don't do what everyone else in your homeschool 'group' is doing because there is some unspoken pressure to do so. Find what fits 'your and your family lifestyle and learning styles' and go with that. This will save you a lot of time, frustration, and money! :)

    Many blessings!!! :)

  8. Hi again Katy,

I had to come back to offer more of that 'unsolicted' advice. :) You visited and left a comment on my blog re: homeschool opposition. Two thoughts came to my mind. When we began homeschooling many years ago, my mother and mother in law were 'not' in support of it. They never came right out and said so, but made it known in 'many' ways and with 'many' pointed questions and sometimes 'rude and hurtful' comments. BUT, as the years progressed, they began to see the vision, they began to see that our kids were different, bright, interesting, etc. My MIL passed away last fall, and even though she never openly said, "I support your homeschooling efforts" I know that she did by her efforts and attitudes. As for my mother, she no longer makes negative remarks or ask rub me the wrong way questions. She can clearly see that our youngest (only child at home now) is 'miles' beyond her schooled piers, in socialization, maturity, and academics. It is clear now that she is a true leader.

Starting out, we joined HSLDA (Home School Legal Defense Association) for security and peace of mind. Eventually, we didn't join any longer. I highly recommend that organization for people with young children though.

Those are my two 'long' thoughts. :)

    Many blessings 'and' prayers!!! :)

  9. I don't know if you will check the comments anymore on your May 1st post, where you were asking for parenting / child training advice. So, I am leaving this post here to say that I left you 'lot's' of specific advice on that post just now. :0 :) :)

    Blessings!!!! :)
